Direct Drive Transmitting

Direct Drive Transmitting

It is the simplest method and includes mounting the armature of the motor directly ont the driving axle with the field rigidly attached to the frame.

The polo places of the motors are approximately flat for making the armature  movement relative to them, without affecting the operation. This method has limited application due to the following fact.

  1. Relatively large unsprung weight
  2. Poor utilisation of material
  3. Low centre of gravity of the locomotive

Another important limitation occurs as the size of motor armature cannot be increased.

after a certain extent due to the diameter of driving wheels. If the diameters of driving wheels is increased i.e. if driving wheels of large diameters are employed, the speed has to be compromised.
